The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District and a company that wants to release genetically modified mosquitoes in the Lower Keys hope to persuade the public it’s a good idea. According to Oxitec’s website, the company’s genetically modified male Aedes aegypti controls mosquito populations by passing genes to their offspring that causes them to die and not reproduce. Aedes aegypti also can carry the chikungunya virus, which also causes painful, flu-like symptoms.
